AI employees vs. hiring vs. an agency: what each really costs

If you need more customers, you have three realistic options: hire someone, retain an agency, or run software that does the work. They fail and succeed in different ways. Here is an honest comparison, including where our own product is the wrong answer.

Hiring someone

A full-time salesperson or marketer is the highest-ceiling option: a good hire understands your business, exercises judgment, and builds relationships software cannot.

It is also the slowest and most expensive to start. Beyond salary you carry payroll taxes, benefits, tools, and management time — and a new hire typically needs weeks to months before they produce. If it does not work out, you absorb the cost of the ramp twice.

Hiring makes sense when the work needs judgment, relationships, or accountability that you cannot supervise part-time.

Retaining an agency

An agency gives you a team without the hiring risk, and good ones bring pattern knowledge from many clients.

The trade-offs are cost, speed, and attention. Agency retainers are usually the most expensive monthly line item of the three, work moves at the pace of scheduled calls, and you are one of many accounts. You also rarely own the operating knowledge — when the relationship ends, the process leaves with them.

An agency makes sense when you want strategy plus execution and are willing to pay for senior judgment.

Running AI employees yourself

Software with defined job roles — research buyers, draft outreach, publish content, follow up — starts immediately and costs a fraction of the other two. Nothing needs to be recruited or onboarded.

The honest limits: it does volume, not judgment. It will not build a relationship, read a room, or negotiate. It needs a person (you) to review and approve, and its output is only as good as the brief you give it.

This makes sense when the bottleneck is throughput — you know what to say, you simply cannot do enough of it — rather than strategy.

How to choose

Ask what is actually blocking you. If you do not know what to sell or to whom, more output will not help; get strategy first. If you know exactly what works but cannot produce enough of it, software wins on cost and speed. If the work needs a human on the phone closing deals, hire or retain — do not expect software to do it.

Many businesses end up combining them: software for the volume, a person for the judgment.

Caliradi is the third option: six AI employees that research, write, publish and follow up, with you approving everything from one dashboard. Plans start at $39/mo.
